Halliburton hired for storm cleanup

The Navy has hired Houston-based Halliburton Co. to restore electric power, repair roofs and remove debris at three naval facilities in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Halliburton subsidiary KBR will also perform damage assessments at other naval installations in New Orleans as soon as it is safe to do so.

KBR was assigned the work under a "construction capabilities" contract awarded in 2004 after a competitive bidding process. The company is not involved in the Army Corps of Engineers' effort to repair New Orleans' levees.

Just when you think things can't possibly get any worse, something like this happens to prove just how much of out of touch Bush and company truly are. Hell, even Fox News Channel isn't backing him up anymore, save Hannity and O'Reilly who watch the chaos from air conditioned studios in NYC.

The only good news is this will ensure a changing of the guard in congress in 2006. Republicans might as well just forfeit the 2008 presidential election now. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Chertoff and anyone who works in FEMA should be given the electric chair for this one.

Bush has now decided Roberts is the nominee to replace Rehnquist, not only for his seat on the court, but as Chief Justice altogether which is unbelievable. How the hell does someone become Chief Justice who hasn't served a day on the court?! It will be interesting to see who Bush nominates to replace O'Connor in light of this hurricane debacle. Before this all happened, he would have been able to shove any nutjob in there, but now that he's politically on life support, he might be forced to choose someone who might not do away with all of our basic rights after all.

Sandra Day O'Connor says she will not formally step down until her successor is approved by the senate. Now more than ever the senate needs to take a stand. What's most revolting to me is that coincidentally Rehnquist's death was announced as the Katrina controversy reached a fever pitch.
